The Balkan Press, through its books, prizes, and magazine (Conclave), seeks poetry, fiction, and nonfiction of exceptional literary merit. The work we seek has a transcendent aesthetic impact on the reader. It is not merely about the mystery of being, but heightens the reader’s sense of the mystery underlying the fabric of our daily lives. We are looking for work about character or work that displays character, that holds it up to a fresh light and helps readers see what they did not see before.

The world is getting weird. What once seemed familiar now too often seems completely unrecognizable. Standards and norms are changing, sometimes for the better, sometimes not, but altogether creating a feeling that the world is a careening ship with no one at the helm. We need visionaries, people with the proper sextant to chart a new course. Historically, the arts have led the way, so for our next issue, we challenge contributors to embark on a vision quest and to submit work that shines an illuminating light.

In this issue we hope to publish a wide range of innovative, genre-bending work that challenges expectations, focusing on originality and emphasizing the need for universal respect. The common thread should be compassion, tolerance, and empathy for the full spectrum of human experience. Whatever your sex, race, orientation, religion, country of origin—send us your work. We want to read it. Help us see what has not been seen before.
